Bamboo use surges, but eco-credentials questioned


Bamboo is the fastest-growing plant on Earth, sprouting as much as 3 feet in a day using few fertilizers, pesticides or even water. It is touted as one of the greenest household furnishings and can even qualify a home for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) accreditation.

The product has grown to more than 5 percent of the wholesale wood-flooring market and can even be found on the shelves of Home Depot. But some questions remain over bamboo’s green merit.
